Terms of Service

These terms govern your use of the Surplus Map website, map and app. By creating an account or linking a device, you agree to them. Please read them carefully.

01Who we are

Surplus Map (“we”, “us”) operates a live map of clean electricity surplus and a rewards program that pays credits for shifting the charging of eligible devices into surplus hours (the “Service”).

Questions about these terms: the contact address listed on our official channels.

02Eligibility

You must be at least 18 years old and able to enter a binding agreement. The rewards program is currently available for devices located in the United States. The map is available to everyone.

03Your account

You sign in with an email address or a Solana wallet. You are responsible for keeping access to your email and wallet secure and for all activity on your account. One person may hold one account. Each device may be linked to one account only.

04Linking a device

You may only link a vehicle, battery or appliance that you own or are authorized to connect, and only through a connection you control (Smartcar for vehicles, Home Assistant or Shelly for home devices). Linking grants us read-only access to the information described in our Privacy Policy. We never control your device, change its settings or move it. Readings that look implausible, or that do not come from the linked device, are rejected.

You can unlink a device at any time from the app. Unlinking stops future rewards for that device.

05Reward windows and credits

  • Windows. When the forecast shows clean surplus in a grid region, we open a reward window. Joining is optional.
  • Verification. Your energy use in a window is compared with your own usual use on similar days (your baseline). Only energy shifted into the window, within published caps, earns credits. About 1 in 10 slots is a control group that measures the real effect and does not earn.
  • Unlocking. Credits are pending after verification and unlock 7 days later.
  • Value and payout. Unlocked credits can be redeemed at the fixed rate shown in the app (currently $0.01 per credit), above the stated minimum (currently 100 credits). Credits are burned on redemption. Redemptions are reviewed and paid out within 7 days of the request, using the payout method shown in the app.
  • Not transferable. Credits are not a currency, token or security. They cannot be sold, traded or transferred between accounts and have no value outside the program.
  • Funded pool. Credits are paid from a funded reward pool. Each window can use only a limited share of the pool, so rates may change and windows may be smaller or fewer when the pool is low.

06Fair use and fraud

Do not link devices you do not control, fake or tamper with readings, run loads only to earn credits, or use multiple accounts. Total daily energy above your usual use earns nothing. We may withhold, reverse or cancel credits, and suspend accounts, where we reasonably suspect fraud or abuse, including during the 7-day unlock period.

07On-chain records

Verified results are grouped in batches. Each batch’s cryptographic fingerprint (a Merkle root) is written to the Solana blockchain so anyone can check that results were not changed afterwards. No personal data is written on-chain; only hashes and totals.

08Digital tokens

Any digital token associated with the Surplus Map community is separate from program credits. Holding a token does not earn credits, and credits are never converted into tokens. Nothing on this Service is investment, financial, tax or legal advice, or an offer or solicitation to buy or sell any asset. Digital assets are volatile and you can lose all of their value.

09Data and map accuracy

Grid data comes from public sources, including the U.S. Energy Information Administration and Our World in Data. Scores and forecasts are estimates, region boundaries are approximate, and data can be delayed or incomplete. Surplus Map is not an electricity supplier and does not guarantee bill savings or grid outcomes.

10Changes and ending the program

We may change, pause or end the Service, the rewards program, its rates or these terms. We will post changes here and update the date above. If we end the rewards program, we will give reasonable notice and a period to redeem unlocked credits.

11Disclaimers and liability

The Service is provided “as is” and “as available”, without warranties of any kind, to the fullest extent permitted by law. To the fullest extent permitted by law, we are not liable for indirect, incidental or consequential damages, and our total liability for any claim is limited to the value of the unlocked credits in your account.
